Water in Education: The VERTICAL CURRICULUM

From Secondary Education to the Master degree.

In 2010 a grant for an action with the title “vertical curriculum” within the Euromediterranean Campus of Tourism and Water, e-MTA Campus, framework in Girona, was awarded.

The aim of this action was to increase the ties between the University of Girona and secondary schools, in this particular case focusing on the “Montilivi” Institute of secondary education in Girona.

During the 2010-2011 academic year several initiatives were carried out in order to create or strengthen the ties existing between the two aforementioned institutions. The Campus e-MTA was the institution in charge of developing this action focusing on the water studies along the secondary and higher education curricula.

To this end a committee was formed mixed academic, formalized through an agreement of cooperation signed by both institutions at the highest level, which was commissioned to analyse the curriculum of “Cicles formatius de grau superior” and the “Estudis de grau”, in both cases referring to water issues, and developing a proposal that would ensure continuity from one educational level to another.

The composition of the committee was initially as follows: Victoria Salvadó (Faculty of Sciences, University of Girona), Nuria Fiol (Polytechnic School, University of Girona), Montserrat Carbonell (Montilivi Institute of secondary education), Lucia Ortega (Montilivi Institute of secondary education). Coordination Committee : Lluís Espunya (Faculty of Education and Psychology, University of Girona). Coordination of the project : Josep Juandó (Support Program for Teaching Quality, Girona).

Later in the academic year 2011-2012, the year in which it was developed most of the work of the commission, Marina Font and Josep Soler, from the “Santa Eugenia” institute in Girona, and Anna Ribas (Department of Geography, University of Girona)  also joined the committee.

Once the work started, the commission deemed necessary to understand the vertical curriculum at all educational levels, from secondary education to Masters degrees. In this sense, the committee redefined the title of the project, which was specified as follows: Water in Education: The VERTICAL CURRICULUM. With the following caption: From the Secondary Education to Master degree. The objective was to have a baseline document that gave coherence to an educational process that identifies areas of knowledge on Water and described a step-by-step journey in this achievement.

A final document was created after eleven months of work and more than 40 meetings. This document identified seven major themes: Water, water and living organisms, Characterization of Water Treatment and Transport, Water Management, environmental Pollution, and environmental impact. In relation to each of these themes, some general competences that served also as a guide for the development were defined. This sequence of competences that the students must acquire to go through the various stages of education (Secondary School, “Cicles formatius de grau superior”, Bachelor and Master degrees), as well as the content associated with each stage.

The resulting document is the basic structure (competences and contents of each of the stages of the education process) from which to design the educational program (context, methodology and educational activities).
