UIB gathers the researchers from in projects CIBERobn and BIOCLAIMS to progress in the fight against obesity

CIBERobn and BIOCLAIMS at the UIBThe research group in Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, Nutrition and Biotechnology – Nutrigenomics at the University of the Balearic Islands (UIB) has organized the Symposium on Biomarkers & Lifestyle: Interaction Meeting BIOCLAIMS-CIBERobn to bring together researchers from two research projects, BIOCLAIMS and CIBERobn, to share different approaches, strategies and tools to fight obesity. One of the challenges of the current research is the development of biomarkers that can identify nutrition and health lifestyle recommendations best suited to each individual. Theses biomarkers can be obtained in the coming years and are the focus of the main research groups and functional food companies worldwide.

BIOCLAIMS

The Biomarkers of Robustness of Metabolic Homeostasis for Nutrigenomics-derived Health Claims Made on Food (BIOCLAIMS) is funded by the Seventh Framework Programme of the European Union with six million euros. The project, which includes eleven European scientific institutions, is coordinated by Dr. Andreu Palou, Professor of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology of the UIB and lead researcher of the research group in Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, Nutrition and Biotechnology – Nutrigenomics.

Its objective is to define molecular biomarkers (based on nutrigenomic new technologies) related to the improvement of health promoted by functional foods. This should allow the project to provide scientific rigor to many health claims for functional foods that won’t sell because clear benefits to health have not been sufficiently demonstrated.

CIBERobn

The Center for Biomedical Research Network –Physiopathology of Obesity and Nutrition is an R&D network structure funded by the Carlos III Health Institute. It is composed by the main Spanish research groups that work with the primary aim of fighting obesity and associated diseases and improve, through nutrition studies, life quality. Dr. Andreu Palou is a member of the CIBERobn management committee.
