The UIB, seven points above the Spanish national average percentage of doctoral programs with Mention towards Excellence

biblioteca UIBOne oh each three doctoral programs at the University of the Balearic Islands (UIB) has the Mention towards Excellence awarded by the Spanish Ministry of Education, which places the UIB seven percentage points above the Spanish average, which is 26.35 percent. In total, 9 of the 27 doctoral programs at the UIB have achieved the Mention towards Excellence in the preliminary results of the call. Thus the UIB is above the average of the 54 public and private universities that have a doctoral program positively assessed by the National Agency for Quality Assessment and Accreditation (ANECA), out of a total of 71 public and private universities in Spain.

The mentions are issued by the Spanish Universities General Secretary taking into account the technical assessment of the ANECA, in order to recognize the teaching capacity of doctoral programs in Spanish universities and research groups and departments dealing with the training of doctors. Mentions to Excellence are valid for the academic years 2011-12, 2012-13 and 2013-14, subject to a positive assessment in the ANECA annual monitoring report.

UIB programs that have earned with the Mention towards Excellence are the programs in Physics, Chemistry Science and Technology, Tourism Economics and the Environment, Neuroscience, Plant Biology, Environmental Microbiology and Biotechnology, Electronic Engineering (jointly with the Polytechnic University of Catalonia, coordinator), Human Nutrition (jointly with the University of Granada, coordinator), and Theoretical Chemistry and Computational Modelling (together with 12 universities more and coordinated by the Universidad Autonoma de Madrid).

In addition to the above programs, four doctoral UIB programs have received a positive report from the ANECA to obtain a Mention towards Excellence.

Doctoral programs with a Mention towards Excellence will be managed through the PhD School of the UIB (EDUIB), whose creation the Governing Council at the UIB approved on November 22, 2011. With the PhD School, the UIB is provided with a tool that should help to promote research excellence and ensure the international projection of the UIB, in order to consolidate it as a reference center in the training of researchers and as a node to attract talent and international scientific collaborations in its areas of excellence. The creation of the EDUIB is part of the Euro-Mediterranean Tourism and Water Campus (e-MTA Campus).
