The UIB participates in the European project I.Family in order to identify why young people eat what they do and how this affects their health

Professor Andreu PalouThe University of the Balearic Islands (UIB) is involved in to the project I.Family (IDEFICSFAMILY), which seeks to identify the reasons why young Europeans eat as they do and to find out how this can affect their health for life. The initiative is coordinated by the University of Bremen (Germany) and involves 15 research groups, including a team of researchers from the UIB and the Center for Biomedical Research on Obesity and Nutrition Network (CIBERobn) led by Dr. Andreu Palou, Professor of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at the UIB. This project is funded by the European Commission and has nine million euros of budget. The I.Family project is based on the information about eating habits of 10,000 children who participate in the study. These data will determine which are the main influences on young Europeans, their lifestyle and their eating habits. I.Family will evaluate families again when its children enter adolescence, identifying the families who have adopted good eating habits and the families who have not. The project will help understand the biological, behavioral, social and environmental factors driving feeding behavior during the transition from childhood to adulthood.
