The UIB creates Alimentòmica, a spin-off with the goal of developing components that increase the presence of leptin in breast milk in order to prevent the obesity

alimentòmicaThe University of the Balearic Islands has approved the creation of the spin-off Alimentòmica, with the aim of exploiting the applications arising from research developed at the research group in Biochemistry, Molecular Biology and Biotechnology (Nutrigenomics). This researches increases knowledge of the leptin protein, related to the prevention of obesity through breastfeeding. The UIB researchers are responsible for the discovery of a hitherto unknown function of this protein hormone secreted by adipose tissue and linked to the system that regulates body weight.

The team, led by Dr. Andreu Palou, Professor of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, UIB, has promoted the creation of a University spin-off to allow further research on leptin and to exploit the potential applications arising from the knowledge about this hormone and its role in the prevention of human obesity. These applications include research and development of new components (nutrients or drugs), conditions or other factors that favor an increase in the amount of leptin and other components of interest in breast milk.
