The UIB collaborates in the publication of the monograph “The karst: natural heritage of the Balearic Islands”

The Kars: natural heritage of the Balearic Islands coverThe University of the Balearic Islands (UIB) has collaborated in the edition of The Karst: natural heritage of the Balearic Islands, a monograph collected through several studies of the current state of scientific knowledge on a geological phenomenon that shapes the landscape of the Balearic Islands. The monograph The Karst: natural heritage of the Balearic Islands is the proceedings of the workshop with the same name that took place on November 24th, 25th, and 26th, 2011 at the UIB, organized jointly by the Department of Earth Sciences at the UIB, the Natural History Society of the Balearic Islands, the Balearic Speleology Federation and the Speleo Club Mallorca.The publication includes a wide range of content items: history of speleology, geology, exokarst, coastal limestone pavement, speleogenesis and morphogenesis of caves, including specific work on the Pas de Vallgornera cave in Llucmajor-, underwater and coastal caves, sedimentary processes, paleokarst and speleocronology, caveman flora and fauna, paleontology, archeology, cave tourism, and conservation of caves.

The volume also includes an article on Joaquim Montoriol i Pous (1924-2011), a pioneer of speleology who participated in several campaigns in the Balearic Islands, and other papers co-authored by journalist and biologist Joan Pericàs Mestre (1960-2010), a former member of the Communication Services at the university.

The publication The Karst: natural heritage of the Balearic Islands is a volume co-edited by the journal Endins, a publication of the Balearic Federation of Speleology, and the monographs of the Natural History Society of the Balearic Islands. The editors of the volume are Francesc Gràcia, Joaquín Ginés, Guillem Xavier Pons, Antelm Ginard, and Damià Vicens.
