The study of the Mediterranean gathers at the UIB the main European experts in oceanography

Expertos en oceanografía reunidos en la UIBThe University of the Balearic Islands (UIB) has organized the first meeting of European experts in oceanography and physics to analyse the study of the level of the Mediterranean Sea.  More than 50 Spanish and European scientists have participated in the meeting. The aim of these work sessions is to create a discussion forum about changes in the level of the sea in the Mediterranean region. The agenda of the meeting has centred in: the shortcomings in the acquisition, generation and treatment of data; the monitoring of the coastal zones and of the open ocean; the improvement of the numerical models of the Mediterranean and the possibility to do projections for the 21st century.

The main goal of the meeting, funded by the Spanish Ministry of Science and Innovation, the Government of the Balearic Islands and the University of the Balearic Islands, resides in identifying the most relevant aspects that claim the greatest effort of the scientific community in the research of the level of the Mediterranean.

Balearic origin of the Scientific Committee

The researchers of the Mediterranian Institute for Advanced Studies (IMEDEA, UIB-CSIC), who participate in the studies of level of the sea and in the organisation of the workshop “Unresolved Issues in Mediterranean Sea Level Research”, includes Dr. Damià Gomis, Dr. Gabriel Jordà, Dr. Marta Marcos, Dr. Francesc M. Calafat, and PhD students Adrián Martínez and Josep Llasses.

This group accumulates experience in the field, which is reflected by more than 25 international publications during the last 5 years. This experience has been recognised in international forums and conferences.

The development of their research line has translated into international collaborations with the main European experts centres. It stands out the close collaboration with the National Oceanography Centre of Southampton (United Kingdom) and groups devoted to the regional modelling, like the NGV (Bolonia), Météo-France and LEGOS (Toulouse).

Currently the group coordinates and develops two important research projects about the level of the sea. On the one hand, the VANIMEDAT2, devoted to the generation of marine scenarios for the 21st century in the Mediterranean. On the other hand, the project STAGES, devoted to the development, validation and application of oceanographic models.
