The SHOWW begins, a UdG project on wastewater treatment with the University of Florence

The city of Rome hosts today the conference to present the SHOWW research project. The Laboratory of Chemical and Environmental Engineering (LEQUIA) at the University of Girona is one of the partners together with researchers from the University of Florence and two Italian companies. SHOWW has received funding from the European Union for innovation in wastewater treatment.

Wastewater treatment requires a significant economic investment. Therefore, to propose feasible alternatives, innovation is a must. Developments are vital in order to lessen the pressure on the environment and to contribute to save costs.

Researchers from the Laboratory of Chemical and Environmental Engineering (LEQUIA) at the University of Girona have been engaged for a long time in the progress of wastewater treatment through national and international projects. One of these projects is SHOWW, short for “puShing aHead with field implementatiOn of best fitting WasteWater treatment and management solutions”.

The SHOWW project starts today in Rome with a meeting with all the partners: University of Girona, through LEQUIA; University of Florence, through its Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering; UTILITIES, a nonprofit consortium that promotes research on wastewater treatment; and, PHYSIS SRL, an environmental engineering company founded by professionals and young researchers from the University of Florence.

The project, that involves 320 experts, is supported by European Union program, LIFE+. The budget is almost a half million euros, of which 50 per cent is funded for its implementation along three years. Researchers expect to implement successful solutions for wastewater treatment and to influence policies and legislation on the sector. In addition, the project managers want to raise awareness of the existence of innovative solutions that can reduce emissions of greenhouse gases (CO2 and NOX).
