The Guillem Colom Casasnovas Chair at the UIB hosts a meeting of twenty researchers to discuss the latest developments on marine phanerogam meadows

guillem colom casasnovas chair at the uibThe Guillem Colom Casasnovas Chair at the University of the Balearic Islands (UIB) has organized the international course “Seagrass carbonate production: from modern to fossil environments”. A score of researchers and PhD students from Spain, Germany, United States, Italy, Slovenia, France and Poland have met in Sóller to debate about the most advanced knowledge on the role marine phanerogam meadows – particularly poseidonia – play in the sea. These meadows have great importance to marine ecosystems and conservation of the coast. The course has tackled all aspects of the meadows regarding the production of carbonates, both on current and fossil ecosystems, stressing the importance of theses sediments as environmental and paleoenvironmental archives.  Thus, researchers have studied the role of these ecosystems in sedimentary processes:  how they are produced by living organism and regarding recruitment and retention of autochthonous and allochthonous sediments in meadows of different species of marine phanerogams around the world. The course has been conducted by lecturers of the UIB related to the chair, the University of La Sapienza (Rome) and the Spanish Institute of Oceanography.

The Guillem Colom Casasnovas Chair at the UIB

The Guillem Colom Casasnovas Chair at the University of the Balearic Islands (UIB), with the Endesa Foundation funding and the support from the Balearic Museum of Natural Sciences, was established in June 2011 as a result of an initiative of the Social Council at the UIB to render tribute to Guillem Colom Casasnovas (1900-1993), scientist from Sóller (Mallorca), and in order to continue his scientific research, which placed the name of the Balearic Islands between the best research centers around the world.

The Chair develops content about paleontology and micropaleontology, and subjects that contribute to the development of such sciences, such as stratigraphy, geology, oceanography, paleoecology and sedimentology, as well as any other aspect of natural sciences.
