The G-9 universities, including the UIB, strengthen their joint research strategy through Univalue and a joint virtual campus

G9 rectorsThe members of the Group 9 of Universities (G-9), including the University of the Balearic Islands (UIB), have decided to strengthen their joint actions in research to improve technology transfer. To do so, the G-9 will give a boost to the Univalue Corporation and strengthen the joint virtual campus. Univalue’s capitalization is an action in the frame of the Euro-Mediterranean Tourism and Water Campus. The G-9 chairman and rector of the University of Oviedo, Vicente Gotor, remarked that the G-9 has to become stronger within the Spanish university system. This means launching joint initiatives for the benefit of all members. One of the commitments is to promote the activities of the company Univalue, a society created to encourage the transfer of research results to society.

The company has handled 60 patents and technologies, of which 24 are in advanced stage of evaluation. The G-9 rectors, meeting in General Assembly at the University of Oviedo, also ratified the agreement of the Research Commission to address the Spanish ministries of Education and the Economy and Competitiveness. They will demand that the cuts policy does not affect the ongoing research programs.

In the General Assembly, the rectors also discussed the policy of internationalization and the positive assessment of the involvement of G-9 in the recent China Education Expo. In this sense, they pushed for remaining focused on the Asian market without forgetting Latin America. They also evaluated the implementation of a doctoral program on Sexual & Reproductive Health in Ethiopia, as well as the consolidation of relations with African universities in Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda and Ethiopia, with which the G-9 has a university cooperation agreement.

Vicente Gotor was joined in this meeting in Oviedo by the rectors of the universities of Extremadura, Segundo Píriz; the Basque Country, Iñaki Gorizelaia; La Rioja, José M. Martínez de Pisón; Cantabria, Federico Gutiérrez-Solana; the Public University of Navarra, Julio Lafuente; and the Balearic Islands, Montserrat Casas.
