The European Master in Tourism Management receives 542 applications

The Erasmus Mundus European Master in Tourism Management (EMTM) has received 542 applications from students in 92 different countries to fill the 30 places available in the 2011-2013 edition. 17 Erasmus Mundus scholarships have been granted to the applicants with the best student records.

Erasmus Mundus master courses (EMMCs) are assessed and recognised by the European Union as excellence exclusive masters. They favour student mobility thanks to a generous scholarship endowment, and they also promote lecturer mobility, since specific items are granted to attract lecturers from other universities. Even better: the university can act as coordinator university of an EMMC, which means that management quality will add to excellence in research and teaching. Girona University, through the European Master in Tourism Management, has managed to become the coordinator university of the first European EMMC in tourism.

A master course in three universities

EMMCs must be organized by a consortium of at least three universities and its lectures must be offered by two of them minimum. The EMTM is offered at the universities of Ljubljana, Slovenia; Syddansk, Denmark, and UdG, that coordinates the master course. Students of this master programme follow the lectures of every semester in a different university, each of them approaching tourism research and teaching from different fields. Thus, in Denmark, lectures are offered at the faculty of humanities, and specialize in sustainability and communication within tourism management. In Slovenia, they are offered  within the field of Economy studies, and lectures are focused on management of the environmental impact of tourism and on EU tourism policies. As for UdG, that has its own Tourism Faculty, the studies are oriented to the management of customer satisfaction, to the complexity of relation networks of the various tourism destinations, and to the comprehensive tourism destination management of. As well as the European Master in Tourism Management, UdG offers another EMMC since 2006, the VIBOT, the Master Course in Vision and Robotics, in coordination with the University of Burgundy (Le Creusot campus, France) and Heriot-Watt University (Edinburgh, Scotland).

A master course with guaranteed scholarships

The director of the European Master in Tourism Management, professor Jaume Guía, explains that the existing scholarship system guarantees that “only the best students” will come, since all applications will be assessed with a mechanism that guarantees access to applicants with the best student record. In this way, out of the thirty places available, twenty will receive a scholarship that can add up to two thousand euro per month for non-EU students. The director stresses the fact that in the scholarship distribution, ten of the students will have to be from non-EU countries, eight from the EU, and two from the Balkans area or Turkey. The fees for the two-year master course are seven thousand euro for EU students, and fourteen thousand for non-EU students. Apart from Erasmus Mundus scholarships, the master’s students who do not apply for them or do not benefit from any of them, may apply for a scholarship under the regular scholarship programme.
