The challenges in conservation and management of freshwater ecosystems, discussed in a symposium in Girona

From June 27 to July 1 the SEFS7, the Symposium for European Freshwater Sciences, is taking place in Girona. It has been organised by the Iberian Limnological Society, the European Federation for Freshwater Sciencies, the ICRA and the University of Girona. More than four hundred international experts will attend its sessions.

The conservation and management of freshwater ecosystems is one of the paramount challenges under global change. At the SEFS7 held in Girona the debate deals with the challenges imposed by current and future changes in freshwater organisms and the ecosystems of which they are part.

The Iberian Limnological Society (AIL) gathers members from various areas who devote scientific research to freshwater issues, a field in which the University of Girona shows a special interest. The symposium offers an opportunity to give a boost to research, as well as to increase the visibility of a major challenge faced by society. At the sessions several aspects of the current situation of research will be discussed, such as ecosystem conservation, environmental management, microbial ecology, and biodiversity, and also new techniques in the field of freshwater ecology will be presented.
