The proposed conversion to an International Campus of Excellence (e-MTA Campus) stems from a model of association of universities and research bodies, based on training and research of excellence. Such model strongly promotes innovation through new technologies, and thus increases the social and economic impact of the UIB, the UdG, the CSIC and the ICRA in the Balearic Islands – Girona axis. This project is unique within the Spanish and European university framework due to its specialisation in tourism and environmental sustainability and innovation, especially with regards to the study and management of water.

In this campus model, the UIB, the UdG, the CSIC and the ICRA become the driving forces for the development of their regions, along with institutions, companies and other social and economic players; promoting and supporting training, innovation, research and transfer of knowledge within the framework of a sustainable economic model.

Within the territorial scope of the e-MTA Campus, the strategic areas for Tourism and Water are a social and economic reality of the utmost importance. Innovation ecosystems have naturally sprung up around these areas. These are active systems for cooperation among universities, institutions, research centres and companies that interact with each other to jointly achieve the goals set and respond to these challenges for Tourism and Water through innovation.

The e-MTA Campus’ innovation ecosystems revolve around Tourism and Water. Within them, various priority topics have been pinpointed in which the campus will increase its involvement, among these, the following stand out: Cultural Tourism and Heritage, Tourism ICT, Regeneration of Tourist Areas, Environmental and Energy Technologies, Continental Waters, Coastal Systems, Media ICT, Health ICT and Nutrition and Health.

From the point of view of research of excellence, these ecosystems and subject areas are based on 4 lines of specialisation, which are supported by the excellence of its research institutes, centres and groups:

  • Tourism Sustainability Line (LST)
  • Water Line (LH2O)
  • Physics, Computing and Applications Line (LFCA)
  • Food and Health Line (FHL)

In order to respond to each of the objectives in the e-MTA Campus project, we have defined the following transversal focal points of interest:

  • e-Sustainability: this focal point concerns creating and transferring knowledge to respond to some of the main international challenges arising in terms of sustainable development in the fields of tourism and water by promoting the Lines of Specialisation on which the innovation ecosystems are based.
  • e-Internationalization: this focal point refers to the international dimension of the e-MTA Campus, which should spread to and consolidate with teaching, research and knowledge transfer concerning Tourism and Water.
  • e-Employability: this focal point concerns boosting potential job creation in industries linked to tourism and water services and new technologies.
  • e-Campus: this focal point is related to the instruments and mechanisms required to promote interaction, communication and networking both internally and between the players involved in the Campus project.
