Strengthening actions: Secondary school students complete practicals at the UdG

On 16 and 17 October, a group of 14 secondary school students specialising in sciences from the Santa Eugènia Secondary School (IES) completed practical sessions in antibiogram principles and methods in UdG laboratories. These practicals represent one of the specific strengthening programme vertical curriculum initiatives, which are an integral part of the Campus of International Excellence (CIE). The University of Girona is involved in the CIE through a strengthening sub-programme focusing on studies of water, and the generation of knowledge and its dissemination in that field. Together with the Montilivi and Santa Eugenia secondary schools, the University of Girona is launching a series of initiatives whose objective is the promotion and improvement of relations between the University and secondary schools.During the their visit the students learned how to perform an antibiogram, a microbiological test that determines the sensitivity of a bacterial strain to the presence of a specific antibiotic.

The practical sessions were held over two days in the microbiology laboratory of the Faculty of Science. In the first session bacterial cultures were developed, and in the second antibiogram testing was conducted and results obtained. The tests were carried out following a cooperative learning method, in which each sub-group studied the effect of a different antibiotic in order to obtain a broader range of results and promote a more autonomous and meaningful working method.

Through these practical sessions the students learned to use laboratory equipment and to conduct microbiological tests in sterile environments. At the same time, they became familiar with the UdG installations and had access to equipment and methods they cannot use in their own school’s installations, thereby preparing them for university studies.
