ices meets at imedeaThe working group on recreational fisheries of the International Council for the Exploration of the Sea (ICES), the leading scientific center for the North Athlantic, has met at the Mediterranean Institute for Advanced Studies (CSIC-UIB) to discuss management measures which are necessary to ensure sustainable fishing in seas and oceans. The meeting has gathered 27 researchers from Norway, Finland, Great Britain, France, Sweden, Slovenia, Lithuania, Russia, Poland, Holland, USA and Tasmania, as well as two representatives of European associations of Recreational Fishing. The Spanish representation of this group has consisted of Beatriz Morales, CSIC research lecturer in the IMEDEA (CSIC-UIB), and Estanis Mugerza of the AZTI-Tecnalia Technology Centre. The main topics of the debate have focused on the design of the fisheries data collection program of the European Union for 2014-2020; to increase the participation of the 30.000 European recreational fishers on taking their catch data, and cooperation strategies to establish a responsible management of resources. The discussion has also covered management measures currently applied when catches do not reach the minimum size required by the EU.

The European Commission proposal to reform the Common Fisheries Policy is currently under discussion among Member States and the European Parliament, and the expectation is to adopt the final text in 2013.
