Rapid growth of the tourism industry in Catalonia.


During the last 12 months, the information of accumulated trends denotes for Catalonia an acceleration of the growth in international arrivals as first destination (+ 4,9 %) and total expense (+ 5,6 %).

The information gathered by the Observatori d’Empresa I Ocupació of Catalonia in its monthly reports with regard to the tourism are:

Entry by airport:

The first two months of 2016 the Catalan airports have received 1,9 millions passengers of international flights, 17,1 % more than in the same period in year 2015 . In this case 64,7 % of the arrivals have been in low-cost carriers and 35,3%, in traditional companies.

At state scale, Catalonia has been one of the leading destinations of passengers’ entry by air. This is so partly due to the arrivals in low-cost carriers (1,2 millions) that allows Catalonia to remain as the first position for low cost, concentrating 30,3 % of the whole traffic. As for the traditional companies, Catalonia is found in the third position, with almost 658.000 passengersand 14,4 % of the total figures for Spain. The mobilities have increased 10,2 % respect from one year before.

Hotel occupancy

The first two months of the year, the catalan hotels have registered new records of occupancy, with 1,8 million travellers, 12% more than in year 2015. The foreign market represents the biggest percentage, with 54,3 % of the travellers and 62,4 % of the total overnight stays in hotels. The hotel accumulated profitability for the first two months rises up to 94,3 Euros for busy room, 19 % more than in year 2015, and 47,2 Euros for available room, with an increase of 31,2 %.

Other types of accomodation

During the first two months of the year, the other types of accommodation options   have received  213.327 travellers and 693.951 overnight stays, registering increases of influx  in relation to year 2015 (+12,9 % and + 13,3 %, respectively).

The most important increases have been generated in the campings and rural tourism establishments with regard to the numbers of travellers, and in the rural tourism establishments and tourist apartments, as for the overnight stays.

Campings have concentrated the biggest share of travellers’ influx (36,1 % of the total) and the tourist apartments have kept the biggest percentage of overnight stays (49,6 %). A widespread increase of the influx is detected for most markets of origin, and the Spanishresident tourism is the one that grows more.
