More than 230 researchers from around the world gather at the 6th European Conference on Severe Storms
The research group on Meteorology at the University of the Balearic Islands and the European Severe Storm Laboratory (ESSL) have organized the sixth annual European Conference on Severe Storms (ECSS 2011), held in Palma from October 3rd to 7th, 2011. This biennial scientific meeting has gathered in Palma more than 230 researchers from Europe, U.S., Australia, Japan, India, and South America. The latest developments in research on atmospheric mechanisms that lead to the formation and development of violent weather, such as tornadoes or heavy rainfalls, were presented at the conference. Although these are phenomena associated with convective weather systems and small spatial dimensions, they nonetheless produce a strong impact on the property and the lives of people.
The conference also targeted social agents, the purpose being to show them the possibilities that weather science offers in order to predict very violent weather and to inform them on the procedures to protect society against these natural phenomena.
