Juan Franch: “Everything is based on contracts, whether between companies or with tourists. It is very important to know the rights and the obligations”

Dr. Juan Franch FluxàDr. Juan Franch, lecturer of Law at the University of the Balearic Islands (UIB), coordinates the course The Contracts in the Tourism Sector: A Practice Vision, which will be held in the conference hall of the Arxiduc Lluís Salvador building from March 28th to May 16th, 2012. The speakers will explain, from a very practical point of view, the legal and contractual issues they face daily. The course, with the participation of Alvaro Middleman, CEO of Air Berlin, Gabriel Escarrer, CEO of Meliá Hotels International, and Ovidio Andrés, founder of Logitravel, among others, can be found here.

How the idea to make this course?

Bologna demands to reinvent training, in order to promote practice and student autonomous work. In addition to a more intense interaction between teacher and student, getting closer to the real world is transcendental, and we consider that this course will be positive for students from this perspective.

What are the objectives of this course?

The main aims to this course are to encourage reflection about essential topics on the touristic contracting and a deeper look on contracts that our students study and that are for daily application for the professionals of the sector. We would like to encourage the debate and a reflection inviting the people who are the main references on the tourism sector in terms of professional career.

Who is the course addressed to?

To any person interested in the world of tourism. It is a perfect occasion for those who want to know the latest trends in the sector and the problems that the professionals have to tackle in the diverse activities in the large touristic sector.

What is the touristic contracting?

A fundamental practice for tourism. Everything is based on contracts, whether between employers and companies, and with tourists. It is very important to know the rights and the obligations, to know which is the legal regime and for consumers is essential to know what and when they can claim from companies that offer touristic services.

What do lecturers speak about?

Basically about their experience related with the topics of the course. Although we want them to talk about the present and the way they see the future of tourism. They are speakers with experience, and any anecdote or experience that they can tell us will be very interesting.

Why can this course be interesting for the professionals and the future professionals of tourism?

The relevance of the speakers and the choice of a series of topics related with different questions as air transport, insurances, the internationalization of the companies, hotel management, hotel rental, … The daily activity of the sector will be discussed, and the exchange of ideas is vital in a touristic sector looking for new formulas.

What will we have learned when we have finished the course?

New ideas and practical knowledge such as who and how will pay the damages caused by the shipwreck of a cruise, why the final price of a ticket is not the same that it has been offered, or what happens when a power cut causes the waste of the frozen food in a hotel. The final result is, undoubtedly, a mystery, although certainly the opportunity of attending these lectures will provide us with interesting ideas.


The course is aimed to students of Tourism and Law at the UIB and to professionals and future professionals in the tourist sector, although enrollment is open to anyone who is interested in.
