IMEDEA (CSIC-UIB) organizes a workshop to analyze innovative coastal observing systems in European Union waters

IMEDEA (CSIC-UIB) organizes a workshop to analyze innovative coastal observing systems in European Union watersThe Mediterranean Institute for Advanced Studies (IMEDEA, CSIC-UIB) organizes today and tomorrow a workshop attended by European scientists engaged in operational oceanography to identify the best practices for the design, implementation, maintenance and distribution of data coastal observing systems in Europe, using the revolutionary autonomous underwater gliders.Researchers at the Departmen of Marine Technologies, Operational Oceanography and Sustainability at the IMEDEA (CSIC-UIB) and the ICTS SOCIB (Coastal Observation System of the Balearic Islands), participate in this double workshop, held within the framework of European projects JERICO and GROOM ant the EGO COST action, funded by the European Science Foundation. The department enjoys a high national and international recognition in the field of physical and operational oceanography, and it has ongoing collaborations with institutions such as ESA, AEMET, National Harbors, etc.

Dr. Simon Ruiz (at the IMEDEA, CSIC-UIB), Spanish representative in the Management Committee of the EGO COST action and main researcher of the project GROOM (Gliders for Research, Ocean Observation and Management), explains that “the working sessions will deal with the scientific and environmental challenges which operational oceanogrpahy faces due to its continuous development, the latest innovations in the development of platforms for maintenance of gliders, or the latest advances in processing of oceanography data in real time and free access”.

Topics in this conference additionally include recommendations in the context of a European strategy for coastal observation regarding management policies, and social, technological and scientific use of gliders in European coastal observing systems.
