H2O Water Line

The Water Line is partially supplemented with the Tourism Sustainability Line. On the one hand, any definition of tourism sustainability in the Mediterranean must take all levels of water problems into consideration and, on the other hand, tourism sustainability is an ideal field of application for water-related research lines, which therefore have an immediate social and often economic benefit.

In addition to the ICRA and the CEAB, two powerful research institutes of the UdG focussed on the subject of water should be highlighted: the Institute of Aquatic Ecology (IEA) and the Institute of Environment  Research (IMA). Even more so, a group of the Institute of IT and Applications (IIiA) is responsible for the Underwater Robotics Research Centre. Up to 21 research groups of excellence with lines directly or indirectly related to the subject fields of water should be added to the previous list. In the case of the UIB, various research groups of the IMEDEA and the INAGEA, and some of the competitive groups of the UIB mentioned in the Tourism Sustainability line of specialisation have a great deal of know-how about topics related to water, in particular sea water. See Appendix 2 for further information.

The main resources are listed below, showing the strength of the water line:

  • The Erasmus Mundus Master in Computer Vision and Robotics.
  • The largest vocational training centre in Catalonia, the IES of Montilivi, on the same campus as the UdG, offering a Water and Alternative Energies Module.

  • The Catalan Institute for Water Research (ICRA). Its main research lines are resources and ecosystems; water quality; technologies and evaluation.
  • Damià Barceló  is the director of the ICRA and he was awarded by the Rey Jaume I Prize 2007 for  Environmental Protection, and by the 2012 Prince Sultan Bin Abdulaziz International Prize for Water of Saudi Arabia in the category of Water Management & Protection. Forming part of the ISI Highly Cited in the field of ecology and the environment.
  • The Blanes Advanced Studies Centre (CEAB). Its main research lines are: Diversity and ecology of the marine benthos: from molecules to ecosystems; Limnological dynamics: interactions at different scales between biodiversity and biogeodynamics.
  • Enric Sala (CEAB), awarded the Aldo Leopold 2005 Prize, the Pew Prize 2006 for Marine Conservation, National Geographic Prize 2007 for Emerging Explorer, Young Global Leader at the World Economic Forum in Davos 2008 and recently appointed honorary explorer of the National Geographic Society.
  • Coordination of a Marie Curie ITN in Integral Management of the Water Cycle and, recently, organisation of two international congresses of the IWA by the LEQUiA-UdG research group.
  • Inclusion, according to the ISI Web of KnowledgeSM (Essential Science Indicators) of 2 members of the GRECO-UdG (Sergi Sabater and Emili García-Berthou) among 1% of the most cited scientists at a worldwide level (Plant & Animal Science field).
  • Recent collaboration of the gEMM-UdG group with researchers from the Craig Venter Institute who included various karst lakes in the lake system of Banyoles and lakes in the Pyrenees in its Global Ocean Sampling campaign on marine Genome Sequencing.
  • The diversity of consolidated groups, of various fields (economics, law, education, physics, engineering, meteorology, etc.) that focus their research line on water management from all points of view.
  • Participation in 2 current Consolider projects and in 1 current CENIT project.

  • Up to seven sponsored professorships at the UdG directly or indirectly related to the Water line of specialisation: Professorship in Engineering, Systems and Water Processes; Professorship in Mediterranean Coastal Ecosystems; Professorship in Maritime Studies; Professorship in Geography and Territorial Thinking; The M. Àngels Anglada Professorship in Literary Heritage; Professorship in Sports and Physical Education; Martí Casals Professorship in Medicine and Health in rural areas.
  • The TECNIO groups of the UdG: Lequia, Lepamap, Geocamb, Vicorob and Easy.
