Sol Meliá Chair in Tourism Studies

The Sol Meliá Chair in Tourism Studies was created by the collaboration agreement signed in 2002 between the hotel company and the University of the Balearic Islands, with the aim to encourage teaching, research and dissemination on tourism issues.

For Meliá Hotels International, as a company with a strong commitment to sustainability and responsible tourism, this award and scholarships of the Chair reflect the growing position of the company in this area. The vice president of Meliá Hotels International, Sebastian Escarrer, has said: “Responsible tourism is the necessary path for our industry in order to develop its full potential for engaging societies and socio-economic equity in destinations worldwide.”

Meliá Hotels International understands its commitment to sustainability in all three dimensions: social, environmental and cultural, and that is why it is the first hotel company certified as a “Biosphere Hotel Company” by the Institute of Responsible Tourism, supported by UNESCO . The Chair is, every year with more strength, clear guidance to strengthen this commitment and to disseminate it among the university communities, who represent the future of the tourism industry.
