v. Social and Business Players

We should highlight the fact of some of the largest Spanish hotel chains, with headquarters in the territory of the Campus, have joined the e-MTA Campus project: Sol-Meliá, which has a highly fruitful collaboration relationship with the UIB through the Sol-Meliá Tourist Studies Professorship, Barceló and Riu, along with all the hotel and business associations of the Balearic Islands and Catalonia; AgBar, Telefónica, Microsoft, Endesa, TIRME, MAC Insular and Sampol.

It should also be pointed out that the chambers of commerce of Gerona, Majorca and Menorca and large financial groups such as Santander and La Caixa have also joined the project.

The Costa Brava Consortium (CCB) joining the project contributes considerably to achieving the objectives of the integrated Campus, which is an autonomous body with its own legal status. It is composed of the Provincial Council of Gerona and 27 town councils on the Gerona coast. The CCB’s main founding objective was to respond to the then incipient problem of managing water resources in the area and preserving the quality of water, especially bathing water, in view of the growing importance of tourism as the main economic activity in the area. Its activities are carried out in 3 areas: supply, recycling and applied research.

The CCB can provide and transfer wide experience in water resource management to the integrated Campus’ students, which may be of great use for the autonomous community of the Balearic Islands and other communities with similar problems in the Mediterranean area.

The support received from Water.cat to the water specialisation line of the Campus e-MTA should also be highlighted. Water.cat is a Connect-EU network promoted by ACC1Ó (The Autonomous Government of Catalonia) specialised in the water sector and led by the ICRA jointly with the Technological Centre of Manresa, the Polytechnic University of Catalonia and the CWP cluster (Catalan Water Partnership). The network, consisting of a total of 39 institutions, among research institutions and companies (COMSA-EMTE  ADASA systems, AGBAR, REMOSA, Water Idea, IsardSAT, SIMO, SENER, ABM, UdG, etc.), stemmed from the objective of protecting the interests, challenges and specific intentions of R&D&i of the Water.cat Group to Europe, lobbying to achieve financing suitable R&D&i instruments for these purposes, make the participants of the network visible at an international level to create opportunities to conduct R&D in collaboration, and strengthen the Global Competition of the sector. Water.cat is organised in 4 work groups: Treatment and cleaning, Regeneration and recycling, quality and control and water resources and engineering. The objective of Water.cat is that the needs and challenges of R&D&i of the group it represents are directly dealt with by the European Commission, being able to choose to hold European calls for personalised financing of the groups, being represented through Water.cat in forums, decisions groups and European lobbies, and Water.cat being used as a channel of specific and expert support on any international R&D issue about water.

Innovation Ecosystems

In the Balearic Islands and Girona regions, the strategic fields of Tourism and Water are a social and economic reality of the utmost importance. As such, they present challenges in terms of innovation, research and training in which the UIB and the UdG are involved.

Innovation Ecosystems have naturally arisen related to these fields. These are active systems for cooperation between universities, institutions, research centres and companies that interact with one another to jointly achieve the goals set and respond to these challenges through innovation.

The e-MTA Campus’ innovative ecosystems are focussed on Tourism and Water. Various priority topics have been targeted in which the campus will increase its involvement. These, in particular, include Cultural Tourism and Heritage, Tourism ICT, Regeneration of Tourist Areas, Environmental and Energy Technologies, Continental Waters, Coastal Systems, Media ICT, Health ICT and Nutrition and Health.

From the point of view of research of excellence, these ecosystems and topics are based on 4 Lines of Specialisation at the e-MTA Campus:

  • Tourism Sustainability Line (LST)
  • Water Line (LH2O)
  • Physics, Computing and Applications Line (LFCA)
  • Food and Health Line (LAS)

Each of these Lines of Specialisation is supported by a series of competitive research groups (68 in all, 90% of the 76 competitive groups in the UIB and the UdG) and research institutes and centres:

  • Tourism Sustainability Line (LST)
    • 19 competitive groups
    • The Mediterranean Institute for Advanced Studies
    • The Economic Research Centre
    • The Catalan Institute for Research into Cultural Heritage
    • The Higher Institute of Tourism Studies
  • Water Line (LH2O)
    • 15 competitive groups
    • The Advanced Studies Centre of Blanes
    • The Catalan Water Research Institute
    • The Aquatic Ecology Institute
    • Institute of Environment Research
    • The Mediterranean Institute for Advanced Studies
    • The Agro-Environmental and Water Economy Research Institute
  • Physics, Computation and Applications Line (LFCA)
    • 14 competitive groups
    • The Physics and Complex Systems Institute
    • The Applied Computing with Community Code Institute
    • The Computational Chemistry Institute
    • The IT and Applications Institute
  • Food and Health Line (LAS)
    • 20 competitive groups
    • The University Health Science Institute
    • The Girona Biomedical Research Institute
    • The Food Technology Institute
    • The Agro-Environmental and Water Economy and Research Institute

The table below shows the relationships between the main topics related to Innovation Ecosystems, the Lines of Specialisation, the main players involved and the focal internationalisation points:
