iii. Scientific Members

The inclusion of the Spanish Oceanographic Institute (IEO), whose researchers from the Balearic Islands Centre take part in scientific collaboration with various competitive groups of the UIB and its participation, are essential for the master’s course in Marine Ecology. The Spanish Agrarian and Food Research and Technology Institute (INIA) joining the project has led to the Agro-environmental and Water Economy Research Institute (INAGEA, INIA-CAIB-UIB centre) being set up. Similarly, the State Meteorology Agency, member of this association, which has a weather station on the Campus, collaborates with various competitive groups of the UIB.

Two scientific facilities in the Balearic Islands – the Tourism Research, Development and Innovation Centre (CIDTUR) and the Coastal Observation System of the Balearic Islands (SOCIB) – taking part in the project clearly contributes to the transfer of knowledge and innovation.

CIDTUR is a leading national centre that creates scientific and technological knowledge to be applied to the tourist industry. The UIB is a member on its Governing Board and several of its competitive groups contribute to developing the aspects in its strategic plan, which will certainly be increased through this project. In order to carry out its work (as explained in the Foundation’s by-laws), CIDTUR’s aim is to manage means and resources in order to carry out basic or applied research programmes and projects, technological development and innovation in the field of tourism to contribute to competition and sustainability throughout the whole value chain of the tourist industry.

The work of the Singular Technological and Scientific facility, SOCIB, is to develop a system of oceanic coastal observation and forecasts that provide supporting data for research and development of operational oceanography and marine technology in the Balearic Islands and Spain. The data can be freely accessed by international institutions and are intended to cover society’s strategic needs within a context of global change. The UIB’s Information Technology Centre (CTI) and other competitive groups collaborate closely with the SOCIB. The SOCIB acts as a distributed and integrated multi-platform system that provides oceanographic data flows and modelled services to support operational oceanography in a European and international framework. Therefore, it also contributes to the needs for marine and coastal research within a context of global change. Its operational oceanography activities are understood here, in the broadest sense of the word, to include both long-term systematic measurements of the seas and interpreting and disseminating them, as well as an ongoing supply of multidisciplinary data to meet the needs of a wide range of scientific research and social priorities. This will lead to a quantitative improvement in our understanding of the key questions about the oceans and climate change, coastal processes in the ocean, the variability of ecosystems, increasing sea levels, etc. It will also lead us towards coastal and ocean management based on the scientific results.

We should also highlight the beneficial collaboration with the Palma Beach Consortium, consisting of the Ministry of Industry, Tourism and Trade, the Autonomous Community of the Balearic Islands, the Island Council of Majorca, the City Council of Palma and the City Council of Llucmajor, for the purpose of carrying out the national government project to regenerate this mature tourism area and export the model to other areas of Spain. The project is being approached from the town planning, tourism, environmental, social and technological standpoints. Several researchers from the Mediterranean Institute of Advanced Studies (UIB-CSIC) and several of the UIB’s competitive groups are collaborating in this work.

Within the Tourism context, we should also highlight the Centre for Research and Innovation in Tourist Industries, which is part of the Scientific and Technological Park of the University of Gerona. This foundation was set up in 2005 with aim of becoming the leading institution in the field of research in the tourist industry in the region of Gerona and in Catalonia in general. Setting up the centre was led by the University of Gerona, the Tourism Patronage of the Costa Brava Girona (The Regional Government of Gerona), and later by the Gerona Chamber of Commerce. All of the unions, associations and/or federations in the tourist industry in the province of Gerona are also represented. It is designed to be a possibility for collaboration between research groups and centres specialised in the field of tourism, the various levels of Catalan public authorities and Catalan tourist companies, in order to take advantage of the progress made in the field of research, development and innovation applied to the tourism industry.

The UIB takes part in the audiovisual cluster. One of this project’s targets is to achieve a change in quality, creating the UIB-Web TV Channel, virtual classrooms and e-labs, which will enable us to make the best possible use of space in the campus and potentially increase the visibility a great deal of the UIB and other partners in the future consortium. The relationship between the UIB and the UdG’s Scientific and Technological Park will be a determining factor in this qualitative leap. As mentioned before, this implies vast potential for both groups and organisations related to IT and its applications and media CIT. Both universities also have numerous relations with the Monterrey Institute of Technology and Higher Education.
