i. Universities

The Campus project presented is also the driving force behind the development of the Pyrenees-Mediterranean Cross-Border Research and Higher Education Group (PRES-PM) in which the University of Gerona (UdG) and the University of the Balearic Islands (UIB) are joined by the Perpignan Via Domitia University (UPVD) and Pierre and Marie Curie University (Paris VI). The latter is taking part through the Oceanographic Observatory of Banyuls-Sur-Mer.

This scientific association, which strengthens the project’s international dimension, is reflected on the other side of the border, where the Cross-Border Research and Higher Education Group project has been presented to the French Ministry in order to systematise, consolidate and strengthen the existing association of the four universities that have signed the PRES-PM agreement. The funding already granted to the UIB and the UdG in the sub-programme supporting this call for the International Campus of Excellence 2010 has allowed us to start drawing up the PRES-PM strategic plan, which is the main action planned in the initial stage. This campus of excellence project will be the basis for developing the strategic areas for this cross-border group of universities in a geographical area with shared history and culture. All this will reinforce not just the Campus’ international dimension, but also the teaching, research and innovation potential of all the universities involved in the PRES-PM. Furthermore, through the PRES-PM Agreement, the future Catalan Cross-Border Euroinstitute (UdG-UPVD) will join the Network of Cross-Border Institutes, which will mean they can apply for joint funding within a European framework.

It is worth pointing out that the project to set up the PRES-PM has been considered by the technical committee for the first stage of the CEI 2010 to be the best one presented by all Spanish universities in the cross-border campus category, and was given the highest score (95 points out of 100). It is also important to highlight that the two Spanish universities taking part in the project are members of the Vives Network of Universities, which consolidates and strengthens their mutual collaboration. Moreover, the fact that the Pierre et Marie Curie Paris VI University is 39th in the Shanghai table (Academic Ranking of World Universities), together with the reinforcement of scientific collaboration with researchers from CNRS of the Observatory of Banyuls-Sur-Mer, will certainly ensure talent is attracted to postgraduate training with international prestige linked to scientific work and excellence in innovation.

The addition of the UPC means decisive support for creating a water cluster in its twofold academic and research fields. Similarly, the framework agreements with the University of Vic and the International University of Catalonia strengthen the specialisation lines of the e-MTA Campus.
