e. Planned Associations

The e-MTA Campus is a project that has arisen from including the prior projects of the University of the Balearic Islands (UIB) (International Campus of Sustainable Tourism and Advanced Research) and the University of Gerona (UdG) (International Campus of Water H2G). The complementary nature of the two topics, the synergies between the two universities and the close collaboration with the CSIC and the ICRA have led to the development of a shared project, which is much more than just the sum of their abilities and makes the Balearic Islands and Catalonia a reference for research and training in fields, in which the core aspect is Sustainable Tourism and Water, and a meeting place for major international scientific collaboration in pre-existing fields of excellence.

In the e-MTA Campus Project we need to differentiate between those, on the first level, that are members of the project, and those, on the second level, that are associates in the project.

The UIB and the UdG are e-MTA Campus members on the first level. Since they were set up in 1978 and 1991 respectively, the UIB and the UdG have activated the social and economic situation in their respective regions thanks to their ability to train postgrads and conduct R&D&I programmes, increasing their technological capital, qualified staff, entrepreneurial skills and their ability to create wealth and employment.

The first level of membership also includes research institutes and centres, which carry out their work in collaboration with the universities. These are specifically centres that belong to the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC) and the Mediterranean Institute for Advanced Studies (IMEDEA), the Institute for Cross Disciplinary Physics and Complex Systems (IFISC), both of which are centres shared with the UIB, and Centre for Advanced Studies of Blanes (CEAB), and the ICRA, a major research centre of reference in the field of water, which was set up by the Catalan government and is part of the CERCA network of centres.

At the second level, there are more than 80 companies and institutions as associates in the e-MTA Campus project, which have been selected due to their leadership in the Strategic Fields of Tourism and Water, the four Specialisation Lines and their participation in the priority topics within the Innovation Ecosystems of the Campus.

Associate companies in particular include Agbar (Water Industry), and Sol-Meliá, Riu, Barceló and the TurisTEC company cluster (Tourism Technology), among others.

Associated organisations and institutions include the Catalan Water Agency (ACA), a public body run by the Catalan government and responsible for water policy in Catalonia; Cetaqua, a research centre partly owned by the UPC, the Spanish National Research Council and Agbar; the Water Platform, a network of organisations that carry out R&D work in the field of water,, the Spanish Water Treatment Board (META), Catalan Landscape Observatory, the “Pagesos” Union, the Coastal Observation System of the Balearic Islands (SOCIB); the Tourism Research, Development and Innovation Centre (CIDTUR Foundation); and the Palma Beach Consortium, a national tourism pilot project, among others.

The section of associated Science and Technology Parks includes PCiTUdG and ParcBit, which are instruments and key levers in transferring technology and knowledge to industry.

The associated Universities include the Polytechnic University of Catalonia (UPC), which contributes supplementary features and high potential research and knowledge in water technology and engineering.

Furthermore, the members and associates belonging to the e-MTA Campus are a driving force in their respective fields of activity and the activating basis for the Pyrenees-Mediterranean Cross-Border Research and Higher Education Group (PRES-PM), in which, in addition to the UIB and the UdG, the universities of Perpignan Via Domitia University (UPVD) and the Pierre et Marie Curie (Paris VI) University are also involved through the Oceanographic Observatory of Banyuls-Sur-Mer.

International associates of the e-MTA Campus include organisations such as the Max-Planck Institute in Germany, which conducts research work in many different scientific fields, and the CINDA and Orión international networks, among others.

In order to enable collaboration between the organisations involved in the project, a network of relationships has been created in the e-MTA Campus. Under the joint leadership of the UIB and the UdG, they perform the activities of an International Campus of Excellence.

More than 150 SMEs from the whole of Catalonia can be added to this network of associated institutions and businesses involved in the project, which have signed specific cooperation agreements, in particular in the field of tourism, proving the level that the project has infiltrated the social and economic fabric of the territory.

From the standpoint of the Campus’ territorial location, the chart of players involved in the e-MTA Campus can be set out as follows:
