i. The Campus Model

The proposed conversion to an International Campus of Excellence (e-MTA Campus) is based on a membership model of universities and research organisms resulting from training and the research of excellence, which strongly promotes innovation through new technologies, in this way increasing the social and economic impact of the UIB, the UdG, the CSIC and the ICRA in the Balearic Islands and Girona focal point. This project is unique within the Spanish and European university framework due to its specialization in sustainable and innovating tourism and the environment, especially with regards to the study and management of water. Thanks to the development of the PRES-PM cross-border group, the most advanced in Spain, and the involvement of the CSIC and ICRA, the international scope and appeal of its actions are guaranteed to expand.

In this CEI model, the UIB, the UdG, the CSIC and the ICRA become the driving forces for the development of their territories along with institutions, companies and other social and economic players; promoting and supporting training, innovation, research and transfer of knowledge within the scope of a sustainable economic model.

In the Balearic Islands and Girona regions, the strategic areas of Tourism and Water are a socio-economic reality of the utmost importance. As such, they present challenges in terms of innovation, research and training in which the UIB and the UdG are involved.

Innovating Ecosystems have naturally sprung up around these areas. These are active systems for cooperation between universities, institutions, research centres and companies that interact with one another to jointly achieve the goals set and respond to these challenges through innovation.

The e-MTA Campus’ innovating ecosystems are focused on Tourism and Water. Various priority topics have been pinpointed in which the campus will increase its involvement. These specifically include Cultural Tourism and Heritage, Tourism ICT, Regeneration of Tourist Areas, Environmental and Energy Technologies, Continental Waters, Coastal Systems, Media ICT, Health ICT and Nutrition and Health.

From the point of view of research of excellence, these ecosystems and topics are based on 4 Lines of Specialisation at the e-MTA Campus:

  • Tourism Sustainability Line (LST)
  • Water Line (LH2O)
  • Physics, Computation and Applications Line (LFCA)
  • Food and Health (LAS)

Each of these Lines of Specialisation is supported by a set of competitive research groups (68 in all, 90% of the 76 competitive groups in the UIB and the UdG) and research institutes and centres.

In order to respond to each of the objectives in the e-MTA Campus project, the following transversal focal points of interest have been defined:

  • e-Sustainability: this focal point concerns the creation and transfer of knowledge to respond to some of the main international challenges posed in terms of sustainable development in the fields of tourism and water by promoting the Lines of Specialisation on which the Innovating Ecosystems are based.

  • e-Internationalisation: this focal point refers to the international dimension of the e-MTA Campus, which should spread to and be consolidated in teaching, research and knowledge transfer concerning Tourism and Water.

  • e-Employability: this focal point concerns boosting potential job creation in industries linked to services and new technologies for tourism and water.

  • e-Campus: this focal point is related to the instruments and mechanisms to be used to promote interaction, communication and networking both internally and with those involved in the campus project.

The figure below shows the structure of the e-MTA Campus with its Strategic Areas, Lines of Specialisation, Transversal Focal Points and Innovating Ecosystems:

The figure below briefly summarises the foregoing, showing the main aspects that justify and define the e-MTA Campus project:
