The UIB awards prizes to winners of 3rd University Entrepreneurs Competition

The University of the Balearic Islands (UIB) has awarded prizes to winners of the 3rd University Entrepreneurs Competition. Prizes are awarded to the best business idea and innovative or tech-based business project, provided they haveprospects in the Balearic Islands. In this year’s edition, 23 proposals were submitted. The call was open for all members of the UIB university community, students, recent graduates (up to 5 years since graduation), administrative and services staff, and teaching and research staff. The Research Group for Audiovisual Heritage, Mass Media and Illustration (PAMMI) at the University of the Balearic Islands (UIB) hosts the Audiovisual Heritage and Tourism (I) seminar, under the research project «Construction of a tourist image through photography. The case of the Balearic Islands». World Climate Research Program award

The researcher from the Mediterranean Institute for Advanced Studies (IMEDEA, UIB-CSIC) Gabriel Jordà has been awarded at the Annual Conference of the World Climate Research Program (WCRP Open Science Conference) for his scientific contribution on the variability of the Mediterranean under differentgreenhouse gas emissions scenarios.

The Annual Conference of the World Climate Research Program was held in Denver, Colorado, October 24 to 28, 2011. Its aim is to improve understanding, prediction and the ability to cope with climate variations that occur naturally and with human-influenced change. These variations have occurred every season since centuries ago throughout the world. The scientific poster of Gabriel Jordà was one of 60 winners from more than 500 submitted by students and young scientists from 86 countries.

The Mediterranean Institute for Advanced Studies, cover page in Sea Technology

Research at the Mediterranean Institute for Advanced Studies (IMEDEA, CSIC-UIB) took the cover of the October 2011 Sea Technology magazine, dedicated to technological innovation in the marine environment. The magazine highlights the work of the Department of Marine Technologies, Operational Oceanography and Sustainability at IMEDEA, a joint research center between the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC) and the University of the Balearic Islands (UIB). The research focuses on the maintenance of an operational system for monitoring oceanographic parameters around the Balearic Islands. The cover of the magazine includes a picture taken at the Bay of Palma buoy.

The IMEDEA (CSIC-UIB), awarded with the 1st Prize Onda Cero Mallorca in Science and Research category

The Mediterranean Institute of Advanced Studies (IMEDEA), a joint research center between the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC) and the University of the Balearic Islands (UIB) has been awarded the first prize Onda Cero Mallorca in the category of Science and Research. Beatriz Morales Nin, director of the IMEDEA, expressed his “pride and gratitude for this recognition of the professional and human qualities of the more than 150 people taht work in the center. This award is a result of continued effort, both IMEDEA as the national scientific community, carried out to strengthen the science as a necessary element of our society and its innovation areas”.
