IFISC (CSIC-UIB) celebrates the first LINC Summer School, Learning about Interacting Networks in Climate

Información actualizada el 10 September 2012

The understanding of climate regulation mechanisms and its changes, both natural and manmade, is a matter of great scientific, economic and social impact for present and future generations. Among the important recent advances in the field, there is the acknowledgement that climate events in various parts of the world are strongly interrelated. For instance, the effects of El Niño are not restricted to South America, but also alter the frequency of appearance of hurricanes in the Atlantic and the monsoon in India. Ampliar +

Researchers at the IMEDEA (CSIC-UIB) analyze the climate change impact on Venice floods

Información actualizada el 10 September 2012

A study conducted by a research group from the Mediterranean Institute for Advanced Studies (IMEDEA), a joint research center of the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC) and the University of the Balearic Islands (UIB) analyzes the impacts of global change and sea level rising in Venice (Italy). The study shows that a moderate sea level rise would imply a dramatic increase in the number of flooding episodes (acqua alta) that Venice suffers. Researchers Gabriel Jordà, Damià Gomis and Marta Marcos estimate that at the end of this century such number would rise from 1.4 acqua alta events each year to 18.5. They also expect an increase in the duration of these flooding episodes (from 12 to 72 hours) as well as the likelihood of severe flooding (more than 75% of the city flooded). Ampliar +
