Non-intentional effects in genetically modified rice plants studied

Maria Montero’s doctoral thesis concludes that it is possible to obtain genetically modified plants substantially equivalent to related conventional plants, and to include desired characteristics in them. The results demonstrate that in a transgenic plant a reduced percentage of genes are expressed differently than in a conventional one and that only half are due to the transgene.

A research study examines the effects of climate change on inland water systems

The University of Girona researcher Lorenzo Proia has used biofilms – microbial benthic communities used as indicators of perturbations related to the consequences of climate change – to analyse decreases in flow and the excess of nutrients and pollutants in inland water systems. His thesis also warns of the consequences Mediterranean rivers may suffer due to the analgesics, anti-inflammatories and bactericides found in the water as a result of human activity.
