A researcher evaluates, in the Riera d’Osor Stream, the impact of metal pollution in river systems

Información actualizada el 11 April 2013

Berta Bonet has defended her doctoral thesis Antioxidant enzyme activities in fluvial biofilms as biomarkers of metal pollution, which was directed by Helena Guasch, and in which a new molecular technique was used to evaluate the toxicity of metals in biofilms. The environmental scientist studied the antioxidant enzyme activities (AEA) to determine their ability to respond to the increase in oxygen reactive species (ORS), due to the toxic effect of the metals. The AEA, in addition to responding to the toxic effects, are also affected by metabolic processes such as respiration or photosynthesis, and at the same time react to environmental changes like light intensity.
