0. Introduction

Información actualizada el 18 May 2011

This document includes the main actions proposed within the Strengthening sub-programme, integrated in the 2011 Campus of International Excellence Programme. This actions are aimed at turning the Pyrenees-Mediterranean International Campus: Tourism Sustainability, Water and Advanced Research (CEI-PM) into a Campus of International Excellence, and their main goal is to turn the campuses of its university members (Balearic Islands University and Girona University) into international points of reference in terms of innovation in tourism sustainability and water management, and into a connection node for major scientific collaborations in pre-existing areas of excellence.

1. F-A1a, Development of cross-border campuses

Información actualizada el 18 May 2011

Description of the action

The PRES-PM (Pyrenees-Mediterranean) is the most advanced cross-border campus in Spain, and is strongly involved in institutions at both sides of the border. Since the PRES-PM Agreement was signed in March 2010, and thanks to the support received in the 2010 call, the Strategic Plan has advanced and a Cross-border Project Office has been created, including a support technician. The PRES-PM aims at advancing in the construction of the space for research, teaching and higher education transfer, following the Strategic Plan (Strengthening call 2010) recommendations. 2. F-A1b, Establishment of International bridges

Información actualizada el 18 May 2011

Description of the action

The CEI-PM maintains a priority cross-border relation with France through the PRES-PM. Moreover, it has cultivated intense relations with Germany, Russia, Latin America and the Eurotowns network, in order to institutionalise international bridges with key countries for the development of various strategic lines of the CEI-PM (particularly Germany in the Physics, Computing and Applications line, and Russia and Latin America in the Tourism Sustainability and Water lines); explore the possibility to establish new relations in the theme and territorial areas considered prioritary, and to foster the development of joint patents.

3. F-A1e, Participation in projects, associations and International networks in the areas of education, research and innovation

Información actualizada el 18 May 2011

Description of the action

The CEI-PM is working in restructuring the management structures of PhD studies. PhD schools execute policies emanating from the research strategic plan of each university, particularly in the areas of talent attraction and training, search of excellence in research activity, innovation and internationalization. Within this action the two schools will be coordinated in a single structure, the CEI-PM International PhD School, which will also include initiatives coming from established internationalization bridges (please see action F-A1b) and cross-border activities (please see F-A1a), chairs, strategic projects (such as CENIT) and from the EU, and participation of innovative companies in preparing PhD theses. The CEI-PM will favour internationalization of PhD programmes of both universities (Erasmus Mundus European Doctorate in Tourism), giving support to the starting up of master’s degrees with a recognised excellence (Master’s degree OMJ in Euro-Mediterranean Relations), facilitating students and lecturers exchange between both universities and also between among the PRES-PM universities, optimizing resources by means of a joint academic offer of PhD activities and improving employability of PhD graduates within the CEI-PM. Particularly it will boost joint programmes including in-company internships and the preparation of doctoral theses in order to facilitate relations with the productive sector and help PhD and Master’s graduates find jobs. Moreover, UIB will create a specific area to help with the preparation of European proposals, included in the Research Support Office. Competitive groups and institutes with a high potential to participate in the FP7 but with little or no experience in it will get special support during the preparation phases of their proposals (search for European partners, exchange of ideas and proposals, and writing of the proposal). Experienced groups will get help to consolidate their career in the FP7: their proposals will be checked and improved and they will get advice about good practices for the preparation process. Special emphasis will be put on common projects involving universities and centres which are part of CEI-PM and PRES-PM.

4. F-A2a, Adapting to the European Space for Higher Education

Información actualizada el 18 May 2011

Description of the action:

In the framework of adaptation to the ESHE, the CEI-PM proposes several joint actions, although each has different applications in each university of the aggregation. On the one hand, and in reference to the improvement of teaching spaces in order to favour learning, it puts emphasis on IT classrooms virtualization, so that any space in the campus may become an IT classroom (that requires an improvement of Wi-Fi facilities in teaching spaces), and on the establishment of a collaborative portal based on web technologies which allows integration of both universities’ and external tools, implementation of cloud computing, and adaptation of laboratories (UIB has detected up to 13 research laboratories needing investment to adjust to current regulations, and also it needs to enlarge the existing animal facility and to build a chemical storage space). This action is also extended to UdG, which will carry out a unique experience by virtualizing microscopy laboratories.
