Carlos Duarte receives the Prix d’Excellence 2011 of the International Council for the Exploration of the Sea for his research in the field of marine science

premi Duarte ICESThe International Council for the Exploration of the Sea (ICES) honors the Mediterranean Institute for Advanced Studies (CSIC-UIB) researcher Carlos M. Duarte with the Prix d’Excellence 2011 for his research in the field of marine sciences. This award, which ICES delivers every three years, recognizes the high standards of research that the scientific community that contributes to the conservation and sustainability of marine ecosystems has achieved. In addition to recognition for his research, Duarte has been awarded for his scientific leadership qualities and the application of science to politics, innovation, teamwork, or direct communication with the public. The International Council for the Exploration of the Sea promotes research in oceanography, marine ecosystems, and marine resources in the North Atlantic area. ICES is a network formed by more than 1,600 scientists from 200 research institutes around the world. These awards highlight the most relevant contributions to the vision of “an international scientific community that is relevant, sensitive, strong and credible with regard to marine ecosystems and their relationship to the human kind”

Professor Carlos M. Duarte Quesada (Lisbon, 1964) focuses his research on understanding global change effects on aquatic ecosystems. He works closely with the UN (United Nations Environment Programme and FAO) and the World Bank to develop strategies in order to increase the sustainable production of marine aquaculture, to restorate and conserve coastal habitats, to mitigate climate change, and to coastal protection.

Soon, professor Duarte will join the Oceans Institute of the University of Western Australia as Director. Previously, he served as President of the American Society of Limnology and Oceanography between 2007 and 2010, and in 2009 was appointed to the Scientific Council of the European Research Council (ERC), a scientific committee of the highest level in Europe.

He has published more than 400 research papers and three books, and he is the editor of several scientific journals about marine environment. He has received numerous awards for his work, including the National Science Award in Spain (2007) and the Rei Jaume I Prize for Research on Environmental Protection (2009). In 2009, he also received the Medal of the Silver Cross of Merit of the Civil Guard (Gendarmerie), Spain, for his service to the protection of the environment.
