A stroll walk through the Indian heritage of Vilanova i la Geltrú

Mònica Àlvarez takes a stroll through the Indian heritage of Vilanova i la Geltrú in her final master’s project. Having completed the Master’s in Local Cultural Heritage Management programme, she says it has provided her with “comprehensive and thorough” training.

Mònica Àlvarez, a native of Vilanova i la Geltrú, graduated with an art history degree from the University of Barcelona and, then, registered in the UdG’s Master’s in Local Cultural Heritage Management programme because she knew that “in the area of culture and heritage, the UdG had a wealth of experience”. In the master’s programme she worked on various aspects of heritage management that were not dealt with in her undergraduate programme. She also did an internship at the Gala-Salvador Dalí Foundation, which she claims was “a truly rewarding experience”.

To meet the requirements for the master’s degree, in addition to doing the internship, Àlvarez wrote a final master’s project in which she catalogued the Indian heritage of Vilanova i la Geltrú, after realising that “research that included the many aspects connected with this heritage had never been done”. To carry out the inventory project, she first analysed and documented the current situation of the Indian heritage of Vilanova. She then put it into context in order to make the work useful, “so that it would still be beneficial and have continuity in the wider world of Catalan cultural heritage.”

Connected with her expressed desire to make the project useful, she has included a proposal to take develop the Indian heritage of Vilanova through a proposed route that explores its potential. The proposal includes elements that, in the words of Àlvarez, “are not found in other itineraries but, after the work we’ve done, we think should be included, to broaden a visitor’s or a cultural tourist’s perspective as much as possible”.
