A project to eliminate heavy metals from wastewater is a finalist in the VALORTEC Competition

The technology, developed by the in the Metals and the Environment research group, involves the reduction of heavy metals – chromium VI, cadmium, nickel and lead  – using agri-food industry waste such as spent coffee grounds, corks, olive stones or grape stalks. The project was selected from among a hundred or so proposals from all over Catalonia.

The “Elimination of Heavy Metals??” project of the Metals and the Environment research group of the University of Girona (UdG) has been selected as a finalist in the second edition of the VALORTEC Competition, organised by ACC1Ó, the Catalan business competitiveness support agency. The technology has been developed under the leadership of Dr Isabel Villaescusa and Dr Núria Fiol.

The aim of the VALORTEC Competition of patent marketing plans and technology-based companies is to promote the transfer of research results to the marketplace, through the development of services and products with commercial potential. The UdG project has been included in the Business Plan / Patent Marketing / Technologies category and will compete against nine other technologies. One of the ten projects will be announced as the winner of the competition in February 2013 and the winning business plan will be implemented with support from ACC1Ó.
