A doctoral thesis proves the benefits of the integrated management of urban water systems (UWS) when a knowledge expert database is used

Damià Murlà has developed a new decision support system for the integrated management of river basin that uses a knowledge expert data base. The system integrates information from different types of sources (theoretical, historical, empirical…) and two virtual systems based on real data (“Vilaconca” and “Vilaprat”) which allow running simulations. Results of the validation stage prove that this approach has significant benefits compared to a standard river basin management, and encourages further research and development.

As a result of the implementation of the Water Framework Directive (WFD), the complexity of urban water cycle has increased during the past few decades. The concept of Integrated River Basin Management (IRBM) has been introduced, and information and parameters that often are not interconnected such as the sewer system or the quality of the receiving waters must be considered. Within this framework, environmental decision support systems (EDSS) based on modelling and artificial intelligence techniques are powerful tools to support the decision making process in the field.

The doctoral thesis “Coordinated management of Urban Wastewater Systems by means of advanced Environmental Decision Support Systems” has been supervised by Dr. Manel Poch (LEQUIA, UdG) and Dr. Oriol Gutiérrez (ICRA) and is framed within one of the current LEQUIA research lines: the study and development of environmental decision support systems (EDSS). The dissertation will be defended next 17th May at ICRA Conference Room.
