1st Field Training Workshop in Underwater Robotics Intervention

From 17th to 21th of October the “1st Field Training Workshop in Underwater Robotics Intervention” will be held in the town of Roses (Girona). The workshop will be attended by researchers from eight universities, as well as the University of Girona.

During five days there are going to be various activities related to the theme of the event, whose goal is based on the sharing of all the knowledge concerning autonomous underwater robotics. The workshop is open to the scientific community and was created in order to accommodate all the international specialists working in the subject and that want to share and/or expand their knowledge of this research field.

The organizing committee consists of a group of professionals who are part of the Catalan research group VICOROB (Computer Vision and Robotics) at the University of Girona. The purpose of the organization is to ensure and encourage researchers to present the results obtained up to date through their research. The essence of this day is to exhibit the research results of each of the eight university representatives that comprise the workshop. Through real robotic demonstrations at the port of Roses, participants can find and fix, together, the technical problems that may arise during the activity. In addition, during the workshop is also planned to perform seven theoretical colloquia related to the different subjects that build the underwater robotics.

This activity focuses their own goals on the basis of the European project called TRIDENT, a new methodology that allows a better job in disciplines such as: underwater archeology, oceanography or industry offshore. This idea is based on new forms of cooperation between an autonomous surface vessel and an autonomous underwater vehicle. Thus, overcoming the current systems which are typically designed to be supervised systems and with a specific purpose. This project involves the following institutions: University of Girona, Jaume I University, University of the Balearic Islands, Università di Bologna, Università di Genova, Higher Technical Institute of Portugal, GRAIL Tech Inc. and Heriot-Watt University.

During this week will be also carried out the christening of the new boat of the VICOROB group, the Sextant, which allows the team to develop a new phase of experiments with underwater robots at sea with more agility and safety.

VICOROB is a TECNIO research group at the University of Girona specialized in developing applications in the fields of Computer Vision and Robotics. This is a multidisciplinary group created in 1993, which integrates researchers with academic training along with additional technical and administrative staff support and development. It currently has a staff of 70 people all around the world.

The result is an intense activity in both basic research and in applied research, with contributions in the academic (the group is recognized as a research group in Catalonia) and projects in the field of technology transfer ( TECNIO member since 2008).
