13. F-B2c, Science summer camps

Description of the action

Girona University organizes its Young Research Camp (JCR) for the 4th consecutive year, consisting of a turn of students chosen for their average grade at compulsory secondary education among those who are in the first year of upper secondary education and 4th year of compulsory secondary education. Since the upper secondary education curriculum in Catalonia involves a compulsory research project, students choose a working theme and the university assigns them a laboratory or group where they can initiate or improve their research project, which they must submit in their 2nd year. Within the research group each student spends a few hours a day under the supervision of a tutoring lecturer. Moreover, students are given general training on various competencies and skills related to university studies, like search of information on the internet, oral communication, health workshops, visits to university departments in the area or communication techniques in English.

The planned structure for the JCR 2012 edition will be slightly modified so that secondary school teachers can also tutor projects in the 2012 JCR, one for each broad area of knowledge. In the framework of the CEI-PM proposal, the 2012 edition will also allow students from the Balearic Islands to access one of the maximum of 10 places available on each turn, of the 30 places offered in total. The research projects in which students will be working will all be related to the CEI-PM strategic lines. Given that relations between the CEI-PM and the PRES-PM are extremely important, students will also go on a trip to the other side of the border in order to learn about de numerous cross-border projects that are an important part of the CEI-PM foundations.

This action is intended to be extended to the UIB campus, as this university has a long experience in organising summer camps in its sports facilities and has 300 students enrolled in them every summer. The aims of this action are to encourage a vocation for science among students in the 4rth year of compulsory secondary school and the 1st year of upper secondary school, to stimulate sports and culture as complementary activities, and to boost university values.
