12. F-B2a, Actions in teaching and leadership

Description of the action

Both the UIB Master’s degree in Teachers’ Training (MFP) and the UdG Master’s degree in Compulsory Secondary Education, Upper Secondary Education, Vocational Training and Foreign Language Teaching have a duration of an academic year and comprise 60 ECTS credits. The curriculum of both master’s degree programmes has three sections: The first one is general and compulsory for all students regardless of their specializations. The specialization section is also part of each of them, and the third section includes the practicum and consists of two modules: one comprising a practicum period in schools, in which this action is involved, and another one consisting of a master’s final project.

As for UIB, access to the MFP mainly depends on the availability of teachers in schools who can supervise the students’ practicum. The number of students for the academic year 2011-2012 has been set at 185 in Majorca, 30 in Menorca and 40 in Ibiza. These numbers are very similar to those of the previous year, in which there were 552 pre-enrolled students, a number which shows this programme’s high demand and also the need to offer a high quality master’s degree programme for future teachers. With regard to UdG, access to the master’s degree programme for teacher training is decided by the Inter-University Council of Catalonia who establishes which specializations are offered every year by each university and the number of students who can take them. At UdG, 100 students every year are accepted in the following specializations: Biology/Geology, Geography/History, Language and Literature, and Technology.

The Balearic Islands is the Spanish autonomous community with the highest rate of school drop-out, so it is urgent to initiate actions in teaching and leadership. Catalonia, which is in a better position, has a higher rate than the average in the country.

Considering the high number of students enrolled in this master’s degree programme both at UIB and UdG, it is necessary to cover the maximum of 50 students per university who will add to this action. The CEI-PM will choose the best students to participate in the proposed programme.
